Do you focus mainly on reading the text, or does the emotional intensity of the scene sometimes pull your gaze away from the subtitles? In a study published in <em>Acta Psychologica<\/em>, researchers <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1016\/j.actpsy.2022.103748\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Yun-Jhen Lu, I-Chun Kuo, and Ming-Chou Ho<\/a><\/strong> set out to answer these questions by investigating how both subtitle availability and film emotions shape our visual processing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"h-eye-tracking-emotional-films-with-subtitles\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Eye Tracking Emotional Films with Subtitles<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The team designed a study testing 225 native Taiwanese Mandarin speakers across 15 different viewing conditions. Participants watched 3.5-minute film clips representing five distinct emotional states\u2014<strong>happy, sad, angry, fearful, or neutral<\/strong>\u2014under one of three subtitle conditions:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Meaningful Subtitles:<\/strong> Written in native Taiwanese Mandarin.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Meaningless Subtitles:<\/strong> Written in Nepali (a script unreadable to the participants).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>No Subtitles:<\/strong> Video playback without any text.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">To record eye movements with pinpoint precision, the researchers used an <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sr-research.com\/eyelink-1000-plus\/\">EyeLink 1000<\/a><\/strong> desktop mount system, sampling gaze at 500 Hz. The EyeLink 1000 enabled the researchers to define a precise Area of Interest (AI) around the subtitle region (3.0\u00b0 high by 37.6\u00b0 wide).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"h-language-comprehension-and-emotion-affect-gaze\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Language Comprehension and Emotion Affect Gaze<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The eye tracking data revealed two major insights into human attention:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol start=\"1\" class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Language Drives Attention (Top-Down):<\/strong> Viewers logged significantly longer dwell times and higher fixation counts on meaningful Mandarin subtitles than on meaningless Nepali or absent subtitles. This confirms that top-down language comprehension\u2014rather than just text popping up on screen\u2014is the primary engine driving subtitle gaze.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Emotion Alters Gaze (Emotion Regulation):<\/strong> Film emotion significantly altered how much attention viewers paid to the subtitle space. Viewers spent significantly more time looking at the subtitle area during <strong>sad and fearful films<\/strong> compared to happy or neutral films. The authors suggest that when viewing distressing content, audiences implicitly divert their gaze toward the bottom subtitle region as a subtle emotion-regulation strategy<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"h-the-takeaway-subtitle-reading-is-complex\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Takeaway\u2014Subtitle Reading is Complex<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">By using high-precision EyeLink technology to record gaze while participants watched videos, this research demonstrates that looking at subtitles is not just an automatic reading habit.
