Animated calibration targets can be a great tool to help engage infants, children, and other special population during the eye-tracking setup process. Animated calibration targets provide a naturally salient object that will draw the eye to the target locations during calibration, validation, and drift checks.
Here are some best practices to keep in mind when using animated calibration targets, especially with infants or children.
The attached zip file contains a variety of animations designed to encourage accurate, central fixations. All targets are circular, use a looming effect to draw attention, and include audio. The videos are provided in two sizes to match common screen resolutions:
For Experiment Builder, set the EL_CAMERA_SETUP or DRIFT_CHECK action background color to 180,180,180 to match the video background.

Here are some best practices to keep in mind when using animated calibration targets, especially with infants or children.
- Size: The animation should be a reasonable size for your display—large enough to be engaging but not so large that it's distracting.
- Motion: Use animations that loom (grow larger) or spin. This type of motion naturally draws the participant's gaze to the center of the target, which is crucial for an accurate calibration.
- Audio: Engaging but gentle. Avoid any sharp or startling sounds that could cause the participant to blink or become distressed, especially over multiple repetitions.

- 150x150 pixels (for smaller resolutions like 1024x768)
- 250x250 pixels (for larger resolutions like 1920x1080)
- Animals: A lion, panda, sheep, and fox that loom and spin.
- Shapes: A colorful star, a monochrome star, and a rainbow droplet that loom and spin.
- Donuts: Three different donut animations that spin and loom.
