A Complete Head and Eye Tracking Solution
The EyeLink 3 is a completely new kind of eye tracker for screen-based research, providing high-speed (up to 1000 Hz) gaze data and perfectly synchronized six-degrees of freedom head tracking data – both with the outstanding levels of accuracy and precision that EyeLink systems are renowned for. The EyeLink 3 has the fastest sampling rate and highest accuracy and resolution of any head-mounted video-based eye tracker, and, like all EyeLink systems, it is easy to use, with fast and simple participant setup and calibration. The exceptional data quality and combined gaze and head position data make the system ideal for a wide range of research scenarios. Furthermore, the EyeLink 3 introduces the ability to record high-speed eye video, allowing researchers to observe the behavioural phenomenon behind the data, in a way that has never been possible in the past.

Enhance Your Research with These New Features
6 Degrees of Freedom Head-Tracking Data
The EyeLink 3 uses a novel infrared (IR) marker, placed above or below the calibrated plane, to provide high-speed (up to 1000 Hz) drift-free six degrees of freedom (6-DOF) head-tracking data.
The EyeLink 3 tracks head position along the X-, Y-, and Z-axes as well as the head rotations pitch, yaw, and roll. You can learn more about 6DOF head tracking data in this blog.
The head position data is perfectly synchronized with the gaze data and is also available to the stimulus display PC in real time, allowing the creation of novel head-contingent or head and gaze-contingent tasks.
Track Gaze and Head Position Over Monitors and Larger Display Areas
The IR marker allows head and eye tracking data to be collected when participants view one or multiple small screens. This setup is ideal for studying standard behavior such as reading and visual search and much more.
The EyeLink 3 also tracks head and eye movements over larger viewing areas and continues to provide head position data even in the absence of the marker. It can also operate in a marker-free mode, allowing for research with large gaze shifts / full body rotations – perfect for studying topics such as the vestibular-ocular reflex or turning behavior in Parkinson’s Disease.
High-Speed Eye Video Recording
The EyeLink 3 also provides high-speed (up to 500 fps) recordings of the eyes – allowing researchers to explore new aspects of saccade and pupil dynamics, such as the role of pupil size changes in post-saccadic oscillations. The high quality eye recordings also facilitate research into eye tracking methodologies, for example allowing the performance of various parsing algorithms to be tested against a ground truth, testing blink detection algorithms, and allowing researchers to develop their own image processing algorithms. The recordings can also be used to study torsional eye movements using open source software, as illustrated below using OpenIris.
Gaze, Head and Eye Pixel Data
The EyeLink 3 also provides novel “head” and “eye” pixel-based data in addition to the standard gaze data (head & eye). These additional data types allow the relative contributions of head and eye rotations to gaze shifts to be visualized and interpreted in a very straightforward way (see image below, which shows a gaze shift that involved both head and eye movements). You can read more about the novel pixel-based data in this blog.
