FAQ: How can I recover the accuracy of a participant's calibration?
#1
This information is presented in the bottom right-hand corner of the Host PC screen when validation is completed and stored in the EyeLink Data File (EDF) recorded during that participant's session.

To recover the validation information from an EDF, either convert the EDF file to an ASCII file, using the VisualEDF2ASC utility (which comes installed with Data Viewer - this software requires no licensing to use, or an alternative can be download here). Once the EDF file has been converted to a text file, open the file in a text editor and look for the appropriate validation information. Typically this would be towards the start of the file and look similar to the following line:

Code:
MSG 8017110 !CAL VALIDATION HV9 R RIGHT GOOD ERROR 0.43 avg. 0.63 max OFFSET 0.36 deg. -9.3,12.6 pix.

In the example above, a 9-point calibration model (see this FAQs for the different possible models) was used and the average / maximum errors are given in degrees of visual angle (e.g. ERROR 0.43 avg. 0.63 max).

If calibration / validation was done more than once there will be multiple instances of the !CAL VALIDATION message, so make sure to identify the appropriate instance.
