Paced Auditory Serial Addition Task

This example illustrates:
  • How to use Prepare Sequence node within the RECORD Sequence to load the next audio file
  • How to use Record Sound and Record Sound Control nodes to start and stop the recording, respectively
  • How to use ASIO driver to control the precise timing of the audio file (see PASAT_ASIO.ebz)
Description:

The Paced Auditory Serial Addition Task (PASAT) is a serial-addition task used to assess the auditory information processing speed and flexibility, sustained attention, and working memory, as well as calculation ability. The task was originally developed by Dorothy Gronwall.

This example delivers four pseudorandom series of 61 numbers from 1 to 9. The participant is instructed to add each new digit to the one immediately prior to it. The four trials differ only in pace of digit presentation (one digit every 1.2, 1.6, 2.0, or 2.4 seconds).

Two versions were attached here. PASAT_ASIO.ebz requires a recommended ASIO sound card installed on your display PC (see section "Installation -> System Requirements -> ASIO Sound Card Installation" of the Experiment Builder User Manual). This version allows for precise audio timing as well as recording the participant's verbal response.

Instructions:
  1. Download the PASAT_ASIO.ebz or PASAT_DirectX.ebz example from this message.
  2. Launch the Experiment Builder application.
  3. Unpack the PASAT_ASIO.ebz or PASAT_DirectX.ebz file to a location on your Experiment Builder PC with "File menu -> Unpack".
  4. Open the project in Experiment Builder.
  5. Deploy the project to a new folder.
  6. Run the PASAT_ASIO.exe or PASAT_DirectX.exe project from the deployed directory.
