Webinar: Implementing Habituation Procedures in Experiment Builder
#1
Implementing Habituation Procedures in Experiment Builder
Delivered Friday, June 12 2020,  1pm EST

Habituation procedures are often used in research on infants and generally involve the presentation of a set of stimuli to a participant until the participant habituates, or becomes used to them in some way. In eye tracking research, habituation is often operationally defined by stimulus viewing duration falling below some criterion value over the course of repeated presentation of the same set of stimuli.

This webinar covers how to implement a version of the habituation procedure in Experiment Builder. The discussion will cover:
  • How to Repeat Trials Based on Participant's Performance (i.e. Habituation Phase)
  • How to Keep Track the Total Time When Participant's Gaze is on a Stimulus
This Experiment Builder project consisting of a habituation phase and a test phase. During the habituation phase, the participant views a set of three images repeatedly until the habituation criteria are met. Once those criteria are met, the project moves on to the test phase. The habituation criteria are defined as follows: During the habituation phase, the average viewing duration of the first three trials (where each trial consists of the presentation of one of the images for a set duration of time) is calculated. Then, starting at the end of the sixth trial, the average viewing duration of the most recent three trials is compared to the average viewing duration of the first three trials. Once the average viewing duration of the most recent three trials falls below 50% of the average viewing duration of the first three trials, the habituation is considered to be complete.

The example project and the discussion of it will be structured so as to make adapting this procedure to different variations of habituation criteria easy to implement. Having basic knowledge of Experiment Builder functionality will help in understanding the concepts discussed in this webinar, but it is not required. For an introduction to the basic functionality of Experiment Builder see the Experiment Builder Video Tutorials.
