FAQ: How can I test my experiment without a participant or connecting to a Host PC?
#1
There are four ways to test experiments without having to set up a participant:
  1. Enable Dummy Mode

In Experiment Builder (Check the Dummy Mode property in the EyeLink section of the Devices Tab of the Structure Panel).

This option allows the experiment to run without a connection to the eye tracker. When the experiment enters an EL_CAMERA_SETUP action a blank screen will be displayed, the [ESC] key needs to be pressed to continue. No EDF file is generated in Dummy Mode, therefore this mode is most useful for early experiment design and stimuli presentation testing. Please remember to deactivate Dummy Mode before deploying the experiment or when test-running with an eye tracker.

  2. Mouse Simulation mode

To test an experiment with the eye tracker but without having to calibrate a participant, enable the Mouse Simulation mode on the Host PC (please note that mouse simulation mode is not available with the Portable Duo Host software). This can be done by going to the Set Options screen on the Host PC (click the Set Options button). In Mouse Stimulation mode the Host PC mouse position will be used as the gaze position for all gaze-contingent action nodes, e.g. CAMERA_SETUP and DRIFT_CORRECTION nodes. No calibration is required for the mouse (unless it has been incorrectly calibrated previously, such as in the case of a drift correction), instead press the [O] key to skip Camera Setup.

  3. EyeLink Host PC simulation software

Similar to the Host PC's Mouse Simulation mode, the EyeLink Host PC simulation software (which runs on the Display PC) uses the mouse position on the Display PC as the gaze position. This method is particularly useful for users with a Portable Duo, which does not currently have a mouse simulation mode. Please contact us at support@sr-research.com for additional information.

  4. Be your own participant

The Display PC keyboard can be used to control things while in Camera Setup mode: transfer the camera image [Enter], switch camera images [left / right arrows], adjust Pupil thresholds [up / down arrows], adjust CR thresholds [+/-] keys, calibrate [C], and validate [V]. For calibration and validation, the [Space] key will start the calibration/validation and the [Enter] key will accept the calibration/validation when completed.
Note that an EDF file will be generated when the Mouse Simulation mode is used either on the Host or Display PC. This can allow the EDF data to be checked/validated in Data Viewer, so that the required trial variables are confirmed in the EDF file before collecting any experimental data from participants.
