FAQ: How can I manage my data when moving it from the original data collection location?
#1
When moving your eye-tracking data to another computer for analysis, it is crucial to move all the necessary files, not just the EDF files. EDF files do not contain your background images, videos, or Interest Area sets. Instead, they contain pointers to these supplementary files. If you move only the EDF file, these links will break, and Data Viewer won't be able to display your trials correctly.

To move the data without breaking the links to the dependency files you have two available methods:
  • Method 1 (Recommended): Package a Viewing Session (.dvz)
The safest way to move your data is to package your session into a single, portable file.
    • Import all your EDF files into a single Data Viewer session.
    • From the menu, go to File > Package....
    • This creates a self-contained .dvz file that includes copies of all the necessary dependency files. This single file can then be easily transferred to another computer.

  • Method 2 (Alternative): Copy the Entire Project Directory
An alternative approach is to copy the entire original project directory. This ensures that all supplementary files and the relative paths to them are preserved.

Long-Term Backup and Data Integrity
For long-term storage, always back up the entire original project directory.

Remember that Data Viewer works with copies of your data, and the original imported EDF files are immutable (they are never changed). If any issues arise during analysis, you can always restore the data to its original state by re-importing the files from your original project backup.
