FAQ: What video formats are supported in Experiment Builder?
#1
Supported Video Formats
Experiment Builder supports video files in AVI, MP4, and MOV formats.

Initial Setup for Windows Users
If your Display PC is running Windows, you must install the provided ffdshow and XVID codecs before importing any video files.
  • Navigate to the C:\Program Files (x86)\SR Research\3rdparty\ folder.
  • Install the XVID codec.
  • Install the ffdshow codec that matches your operating system (either 32-bit or 64-bit).

Once installed, you can import video files into your project library via Edit > Library Manager > Video tab > + button. If the video is compatible, its first frame will appear in the lower panel.

Troubleshooting Incompatible Videos
Since formats like AVI and MP4 are containers, some videos may not be playable even if they have the correct file extension.

If Experiment Builder cannot import your video, you will need to re-encode it using third-party software. We recommend using either Pazera or following this guide to convert videos with FFMPEG.

Playing Audio from Video Files
To preserve precise timing, Experiment Builder handles video and audio tracks separately. You cannot play embedded audio directly from a video file. To play the audio alongside your video, you must first extract it.
  1. Open Experiment Builder's companion app, SplitAVI.
    • Windows: Start Menu > SR Research > SplitAVI
    • Mac: Applications > Experiment Builder > splitAVI > SplitAVI
  2. Use the app to extract the audio and save it as a separate WAV file. (You can change the save directory under View > Options).

  3. Import the new WAV file into your project's sound library via Edit > Library Manager > Sound tab.
For detailed instructions on synchronizing the audio and video playback, please consult the Experiment Builder User Manual (Help > Contents > Experiment Graph and Components > Components > Actions > Play Sound).
