FAQ: Windows Display PC: How can I setup an ASIO Sound Card?
#1
Applies to: Windows Display PCs only.

If you require millisecond-accurate timing for audio playback or recording in your experiment, you must use an ASIO-capable sound card. Standard Windows audio drivers can introduce significant and variable latencies which are unsuitable for gaze-contingent auditory research.
  1. Tested ASIO Sound Cards
SR Research has explicitly tested the following sound cards for compatibility with Experiment Builder (version 2.5 and higher) on Windows 10 and 11. While other cards with native ASIO support may work, SR Research strongly suggests using a card from this list. The current and complete list of device can be found in the latest Experiment Builder -> Help (F1).

    PCI-Express Cards
    • Creative Labs Sound Blaster Audigy 5/RX (Model SB1550)
    • Creative Labs Sound Blaster AE-5 (Model SB1740) *Note: This card has a 4ms delay for Voice Key triggers.

    USB Interfaces
Note: The performance of USB-based cards can be influenced by buffer size settings and other USB devices connected to the system.
    • M-Audio Air 192|4
    • M-Audio Air 192|6
    • M-Audio M-Track Solo
    • M-Audio Uber Mic

  2. Configuration Instructions
ASIO configuration requires specific driver installation and setup steps that vary by device. Please refer to the Experiment Builder User Manual for the official, step-by-step setup guide.

    How to find the instructions:
    1. Open Experiment Builder.
    2. Click on Help in the top menu and select Contents.
    3. Navigate to Installation -> Windows PC System Requirements -> ASIO Card Installation.

  3. Using the ASIO Soundcard
In your Experiment Builder project navigate to Devices -> Audio and set the Audio Driver to ASIO.
