CASE STUDY: Exposure to Bullying Engages Social Distress Circuits in the Adolescent and Adult Brain

Bullying is a major stressor with severe consequences for mental health. Yet, how the human brain acutely reacts to naturalistic, real-world peer victimization has remained elusive. In a 2025 study published in The Journal of Neuroscience, Birgitta Paranko and colleagues investigated how simulated bullying engages emotional, physical, and attentional systems across adolescents and adults.
The Methodology: Simulating Victimization in the Lab
To map both neural and physiological responses to bullying, researchers combined functional MRI (fMRI) with precise eye tracking:
- Naturalistic Video Stimuli: Participants watched first-person perspective video clips showing realistic social interactions filmed in a school environment. The videos depicted either peer bullying (verbal, physical, or social exclusion) or positive social interactions.
- Neuroimaging Phase: 51 adolescents and 47 adults underwent fMRI scanning while viewing the video clips to measure moment-to-moment brain activation.
- Eye Tracking Experiment: In a separate testing session, 57 adults watched the same videos while an EyeLink 1000 Plus eye tracker recorded their visual gaze patterns, fixation frequency, and pupil dilation.
Bullying Puts the Central Nervous System into Alarm
The fMRI data revealed that exposure to bullying activated broad socioemotional threat networks (including the amygdala and insula) alongside somatosensory and motor areas.
The eye-tracking experiment confirmed that bullying triggers a heightened state of physiological arousal and vigilance. Watching bullying scenarios led to significantly larger pupil sizes—a marker of sympathetic nervous system arousal—and a higher fixation frequency as participants rapidly scanned the threatening social scene. However, overall dwell time was reduced during bullying clips compared to positive ones, pointing to a potential visual avoidance strategy in response to social threat.
Bullying is not just an abstract emotional event; it puts the central nervous system into a state of physical alarm. High-precision eye tracking reveals that peer victimization triggers immediate autonomic arousal and hyper-vigilant scanning behavior. By capturing rapid pupil and gaze shifts alongside brain activity, the research shows how peer aggression acts as an acute, embodied stressor.
