Citing Eye-Tracking Apparatus and Software

Citing hardware and software correctly in publications is important to ensure reproducibility and provide transparency regarding the tools and methods used during research. It also helps us a great deal in maintaining our database of EyeLink publications! We have reproduced the current APA (7th edition) guidelines for citing hardware and software, and provide some examples of how to cite our products in the text body and reference section below:

Guidelines for Referencing EyeLink Eye Tracking Hardware

Author. (Year). Name of apparatus (Model #) [Apparatus]. Publisher. URL.

  • Manufacturer as Author: The manufacturer is treated as the author for specialized research equipment.
  • Year of Introduction: The year refers to when the manufacturer introduced apparatus, not when bought. If the date is unknown, use “(n.d.)”.
  • Name of Apparatus, Model Number, and Type: Include the name of the product followed with the model number in round parentheses, if appropriate, and then the type of item in square parentheses (e.g., [Apparatus], [Apparatus and software]).
  • Publisher: If the manufacturer is the publisher, the publisher can be omitted.
  • Website URL: Include the URL of the product’s webpage, if available
