Basketball Methodology
To capture natural visual dynamics, researchers tested 12 near-expert and 12 amateur basketball players under realistic match conditions. Participants wore an EyeLink II eye-tracking system alongside an inertial movement sensor on their shooting hand. The EyeLink setup enabled binocular tracking at high temporal resolution, recording visual focus alongside body motion.
Each player took 20 three-point shots after receiving a pass from a teammate who immediately acted as an active defender. The methodology targeted specific behavioral and gaze variables across three distinct movement phases (catching, aiming, and ball flight):

Visual Strategy Differences Between Basketball Skill Levels
The EyeLink system revealed clear differences in visual strategy between skill levels and phase transitions:
- Sustained Fixations: Near-experts maintained significantly longer fixations during aiming and ball flight compared to amateurs.
- Controlled Eye Movements: Near-experts produced saccades with lower amplitudes and lower peak velocities across all phases.
- Shift at Release: All players anchored their gaze during catching and aiming. Saccade rates spiked dramatically right as the ball left their hands.
These findings demonstrate that higher skill levels correlate with more stable visual control during crucial movement phases. Near-experts successfully stabilize their gaze during shot preparation despite defensive pressure. The sudden rise in eye movements at ball release reflects an immediate shift toward tracking the rim for potential rebounds. Thus, elite shooting performance relies on maintaining steady visual stability on the target during early preparation, then rapidly shifting focus as the ball is released.
